The purpose was to explore how a rural community and a commercial enterprise could work hand in hand to each group's benefit. Profiled in TIME Magazine and many other international and national media Tembi is now one of Indonesia's major bases for handicraft production.Recently Tembi has also become a centre of art with young overseas artists taking up temporary residence and working together with their local contemporaries. TheTembi Contemporary Gallery has been established and is already well known for its efforts to promote the work of young Yogyakarta artists.
